Verbs are an integral part of the sentence and can illuminate pages when writers selectively choose them. Verbs are the only words that can make a sentence by themselves! In fact, we speak verb sentences quite often: See? Relax. Look! Although they do have implied subjects (you understood), it's still impressive that they can carry a sentence on their own. Because verbs are so vibrant, we will begin using the symbol, rather than merely underlining to identify them. This will prepare students for the order of operations performed on sentences before diagramming (which will be addressed in GrammarActive® Sentence Structure series). This unit will also prepare students to write using the proper tense and mood of the verb while paying close attention to subject-verb agreement.
