Prepositions ARE connectors; they most often connect other words in the sentence to a noun or pronoun. Their primary function is to introduce a phrase that shows relationship to other words in the sentence. Prepositions are very social—they never stand alone. This preposition unit is designed to help students identify prepositions as harbingers of phrases, and by doing so, students will then be better able to recognize and eventually construct complete thoughts as sentences, instead of mere phrases and fragments. As with other parts of speech in the GrammarActive™Parts of Speech Series, the preposition has an identifiable mark: the shape of Pinc's wings, parenthesis ( ).

Conjunctions are match makers that function to join words, phrases, and clauses. When using coordinating and correlative conjunctions, the tricky part for students is maintaining equality in the words and phrases joined. If it is done properly, they achieve proper parallel construction. If the joining is not equitable, then the construction is non-parallel. This concept of writing with proper paralleled construction is especially crucial for students attempting to produce fully developed writing. When students become aware of the power of varying sentence type and structure, their writing improves exponentially. Since conjunctions are matchmakers, we identify them with a heart shape.

Interjections: Hey! What do you know about interjections? Exactly. They are the easiest part of speech for students to identify. They connote emotion and are never far from an exclamation point. While they are important for students to recognize and use, they are rarely used in formal writing. Their value is often recognized in dialogue and creative writing.
